What is a Visa Prepaid Card and how do I use it?
The Visa Prepaid Card is a card that you pre-load with money and then use to purchase merchandise and services anywhere Visa is accepted electronically. It is not redeemable for cash. It is not reloadable and cannot be used at ATMs, for recurring payments, for gambling or at merchants requiring a manual imprint. The amount of every purchase you make will be automatically deducted from the balance on the card.
How can I check the balance on my Visa Prepaid Card?
There are three ways you can keep track of your balance: visit www.myrewardcard.ca
(free service) or call the toll-free number on the back of your card (charges may apply) or manually keep track of your balance as you spend. Merchants do not have access to your card balance.
What if I want to buy something that costs more than the balance on the Visa Prepaid Card?
If you want to make a purchase for more than the available balance on your card, you must tell the cashier the exact amount to charge to the Visa Prepaid Card first, then use another method of payment for the remaining purchase amount, this is known as a split payment. For example, to make a purchase for $50 with only $30 left on your card, tell the cashier to ONLY charge $30 to the card first, then give the cashier another method of payment to pay for the remaining $20. Remember, merchants do not know your card balance and cannot automatically deduct the remaining balance from your card so if you don't tell the cashier you would like to use two forms of payment and then try to make a purchase for more than the amount on the Visa Prepaid Card, the transaction will be declined because you don't have enough funds on the card.
Can I add more money to the Visa Prepaid Card?
No. This Visa Prepaid Card is not reloadable and it has no ATM or PIN functionality.
Can the Visa Prepaid Card be replaced if lost or stolen?
Yes, if your card is lost or stolen, immediately call Customer Service at the toll-free number on the back of your card to have your card reported lost or stolen. You will need to know your Visa Prepaid Card number and have registered your card, so be sure to record it in a safe place. Registering your card online when you receive it will assist this process. You may also be required to provide additional information. After you report your Visa Prepaid Card lost or stolen, a replacement card with the remaining balance minus a $20.00 replacement fee will be mailed to you. Please allow 30 days after reporting to receive your replacement card.
How long can I use the Visa Prepaid Card?
Your Visa Prepaid Card expires at the end of the month and year printed on the front of the card. When your card expires, the card account will be closed. If there is a balance remaining after the expiration date, a fee equal to the remaining unused balance of the card will be charged.
How do I use my Visa Prepaid Card at restaurants or other service industries?
All restaurants and other service-related merchants will factor in an additional 15% (or more) in pre-approval ONLY to cover any tip you may leave on the purchase - you only pay the amount you sign for at the end which could be more or less. This means you need to have an available balance on your card of at least 15% more than your total bill. If your total purchase after adding in the additional 15% (or more) exceeds the balance on the Visa Prepaid Card, it will be declined. Similarly, some hotels may choose to factor in additional amounts upon check-in, and it may take up to thirty days after your stay to have any excess amounts held by the hotel added back to your available balance.
Can I use my Visa Prepaid Card to pay at the pump at gasoline stations?
You can only pay inside the store at the cashier.
What happens if I need to return something I purchased with my Visa Prepaid Card?
Keep your Visa Prepaid Card in case you need to return merchandise for credit. Merchandise return and refund policies vary by merchant. Merchants may credit your Visa Prepaid Card, provide a cash refund, or provide a store credit. If a credit is issued to the Visa Prepaid Card, it may take up to seven business days for the funds to appear on your card balance. Check your balance regularly on the free reporting website to determine when your card has been credited for the return.
Can I receive a statement?
You can review your current balance and recent transactions for free by visiting www.myrewardcard.ca. There are no mailed statements.
Why should I register my Visa Prepaid Card for online, mail or telephone purchases?
When making an online, mail or telephone order, these merchants often check that the information you have provided matches the information that is registered to the Visa Prepaid Card such as name, address, telephone number and email address prior to purchase. If you wish to make online, mail or telephone order purchases, you will need to go to www.myrewardcard.ca to register your Visa Prepaid Card with this information. Unless you register your card in advance, there will be no way an online, mail or telephone order merchant can confirm your identity. Without such confirmation, the merchant might decline your purchase even if there are sufficient funds on the card. Even with such registration we cannot guarantee that every merchant is enabled to accept Visa Prepaid Cards as systems and merchant approvals vary.
Why is there a fee to purchase Visa Prepaid Cards?
The purchase fee is to cover the card and packaging, managing and paying merchants on your behalf, and to provide you services with the card.
