Completing Purchases
Visa Prepaid Cards issued by Citizens Bank of Canada can be spent everywhere Visa is accepted including online. The cards are not reloadable, cannot be used to withdraw cash, nor usable for recurring payments.
Expiry Date and Balance Available
Your card, like every network card, has an expiry date shown on the front. You must use your balance before the end of the month shown on the expiry date. Check your balance for free by using the reporting website (www.myrewardcard.ca). which you must register for when you receive your card.
Using Your Card at Restaurants and Other Selected Merchants
All restaurants and other service-related merchants will factor in an additional 15% (or more) in pre-approval ONLY to cover any tip you may leave - you will only pay the final amount you sign for and stated as a tip at the end which could be more or less. This means you need to have an available balance on your card of at least 15% more than your total bill. For example, if your restaurant bill is $20.00 your card must have at least $23.00 on it to be accepted. If your total purchase after adding in the additional 15% (or more) exceeds the balance on the Visa Prepaid Card, it will be declined.
Similarly, some hotels may choose to factor in additional amounts upon check-in, and it may take up to thirty days after your stay to have any excess amounts held by the hotel added back to your available balance. This same rule applies to Hotels, Mail Order, Car Rentals, and Cruise Lines.
We do not recommend using your Visa prepaid card for authorizations at car rental establishments or hotels as this will reduce your available balance for other purchases for up to 30 days. Please use another card for making reservations.
Pay at the Store, not at the Pump
Your Card CANNOT be used to pay for fuel at “pay at the pump” kiosks but CAN be used to pay for fuel in-store with the cashier.
Always Know Your Balance
Merchants can’t check the balance on your card. Always ensure you know your balance so you can advise the merchant how much to authorize on the card.
For example, if you have $21.50 left on your card and your purchase is a higher dollar value, ask the merchant to take $21.50 off your card and say you will pay for the remainder with a different method of payment. (see split payments below for details).
You have a number of ways to keep track of your balance
- You can keep a manual running total of your balance by subtracting your purchases from the original loaded value.
- You can visit the free reporting website www.myrewardcard.ca
which is shown on the back of your card to get your balance and transaction history.
- You can call the IVR at the toll free number shown on the back of your card.
- You can speak with a live agent by calling the number shown on the back of your card.
Split Payments at Merchants
As your balance reduces you will likely want to use your remaining balance and pay cash or another card payment for the remaining balance of your purchase; this is known as a split payment. Many merchants can handle this particularly if the other payment is cash, however not all merchants have the ability to accept multiple forms of payment.
If you intend on making a split payment, make sure you advise the merchant before the transaction to ensure they are able to process it. If they say they are unable, use another form of payment and use your Visa prepaid card at a different merchant who can handle split payments.
Using Your Card Online
To improve the acceptance of your card online, you must login and register your card at the website shown on the back of the card www.myrewardcard.ca An increasing number of websites check cardholder registration and this registration is generally a requirement for online transactions. Ensure you provide your proper address information that will be requested when you purchase online. Please note we do not guarantee that your card will be accepted at all websites due to varying security requirements. This card cannot be used for recurring payments or for online gambling.
Enjoying a Fee Free Gift Card
To avoid fees, use the balance on your card before the expiry date on the card front and use the free website to check your card balance. Leaving a remaining balance on your card after card expiry will result in fees being charged to the balance on your card (see the cardholder agreement on this website for complete details). Please spend every penny on your card and if you are down to just a few dollars remaining balance, use the split payment technique (see above) at a large retailer to get to $0 balance.
